Teeny tiny
September 23rd, 2007 at 4:42 pm (Finished Items, Random babbling)
My cousin gave birth to a little girl on Thursday, about 3 months early. Thankfully, both mother and baby are doing well and baby’s prognosis seems good. My cousin developed preeclampsia and they did a c-section, thankfully now her blood pressure has come down and she was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital today. Baby weighed 1lb 11oz and was 13″ long at birth and she will be in the NICU for quite a while, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that she was staying there until her due date. I am very pleased to hear that the hospital has a milk bank, so the baby has been getting donor milk while my cousin is waiting for the milk fairy to arrive.
In an effort to feel like I’m doing something, I knit up some teeny tiny preemie hats.
So incredibly tiny…
I used Cotton Ease in the Lime color, on size 7 DPNs. Pattern here. The front two are the size she says will fit a 2# baby, the back one is the size that should fit a 3-4# baby. I can’t fathom how tiny a baby’s head must be to fit these hats.
I don’t know if there’s a need for these hats at the hospital where the baby is, I haven’t had a chance to call and talk to the NICU nurses yet. If they don’t need them, I know there are several other programs that are collecting them.
There’s more stuff too, but I thought this needed its own post.

Wow! Teeny tiny is right! I’m so glad to hear that mom and baby are doing well. That must have been a bit scary for the family. Those hats are darling - there will definitely be teeny tiny heads for them somewhere!!

ugh, that pre-e is NOT a fun time. how scary! your cousin is lucky to have a wonderful person like you to make teeny tiny hats for her! evie was only a month early (5 pounds, 10 oz, though she was down to 5 lbs 2 oz when we left the hospital 5 days later) and i felt so bad that the sweater i made her was FAR too big. so i made her a little teeny tiny sweater. that she never wore as it was july and no less than 95 degrees every day. we did put it on her for the sake of saying that we did.
and then, *blink* it suddenly didn’t fit and she fit into the original. they grow so fast when they are little!
best wishes to your cousin and her little (teeny!) one! and yea for milk banks! go boobie milk go!

Oh, that must be so scary! I am continually amazed at the medical technology today. I am glad to hear everyone is alright. I had never heard of a milk bank.

Congrats on the new addition to your family! I will be sending good thoughts their way! I love the hats - hopefully, they will let her wear them. What is better then having something close to skin that was made with love!

at least you didn’t model the baby hats ON the apple. then i would have thought you were leaning towards actually making that silly apple cozie we chatted about!
thanks for keeping me posted about Audrey!
