About Me!

My name is Jess and I’m now 30 (wow!). I have two kids, four cats, a homebrewer husband, and a wool addiction. The wool addiction is fostered by the yarn shop less than 2 blocks from my home, where they know me by name and wonder where I am when I don’t visit for a while. The adjacent coffee shop is a favorite hangout as well.

I lean leftward in my politics, I’m pro-choice, not terribly religious (though I feel a pull to attend church now and again), and not as crunchy as I think I should be. I practice attachment parenting, breastfeed my kids until they’re done (I tandem nursed them for almost a year), use cloth diapers, give birth at home (the girl at a hospital, the boy was born in our dining room, any future children will be born at home too), don’t vaccinate, don’t circumcise, etc. etc. etc. I also drive a minivan, watch a lot of tv, spend a lot of time on my computer (woohoo wireless!), have a cell phone, don’t recycle every scrap of paper, eat lots of meat and most of the produce I eat is non-organic. It kind of balances out, I suppose.

I learned to knit when I was in elementary school but didn’t go anywhere with it. I taught myself to crochet when I was older, maybe in middle school or maybe high school, and did that for several years until I developed a nice case of tendonitis. That went away when I stopped baking and cooking for a living, but the crocheting aggravated it still (and still does 5+ years later). I spotted a coworker knitting in her cube at my last job and stopped off at the yarn shop on my way home from work that day. Bought circular needles, yarn, and a pattern, and the rest is history!

Now I try to do a good amount of handspinning as part of my fibery pursuits and my spinning fiber stash definitely rivals the size of my yarn stash! And then there’s the stash of handspun yarn… I use a Majacraft Suzie wheel, which I love.
